Last night I traveled from Castlegar to the NDYC to work with the staff to celebrate, and support, the skateboarding culture in Nelson. Since first seeing the space in the late 90′s I have followed the activities of the NDYC.
Nelson is the second event of the 2012 Winter Skateboard Series. Organizing this 3 event skateboard series is succeeding in keeping a lens on the positive aspects of people participating in skateboarding.
A unique aspect to these events has been recording and streaming the skateboarding live onto the internet via the portal: www.livestream.com/kootenayskateboardseries This has not been attempted before and really shows the world the talents here in the Kootenay’s.
Event Recap
About 15 skaters signed onto to the event on Friday night. The under 13 skaters rolled first with confidence through the street obstacles. Each skater had a unique style pushing themselves to improve. The mums and dads looked on with glee as the kids were enjoying the opportunity to skateboard with their peers.
The 13+ group really put on a great exhibition of shredding in the street area and also the wooden bowl. Check out some of the footage recorded.
